Rottnest Express Photoshoot

Yesterday was the Rottnest Express photoshoot, starting at Fremantle then heading out to Rottnest and photographing/filming various vessel’s and site’s. The photo’s below are of the Eco Express which does tour’s of Rottnest visiting all the small bay’s and getting up close to the wildlife of Rottnest.

We’ve done a few shoot’s at Rottnest but I’ve never seen as much wildlife as on this trip, there were so many dolphin’s, seals and whale’s that everywhere we looked there was something jumping out of the water! Cinematagropher Leighton De Barros came along and filmed heap’s of action as well so will post the link to the footage sometime soon. Thank’s to Leighton for filming all this, Jasmine from Rottnest Express for getting to run this smoothly and Ash (pilot) from Heliwest for coming in on his day off! Should have some more image’s up over the next few day’s.

360 Aerial Virtual Tour of Perth

My previous post about the 360 Aerial Panorama was actually a lead-in to a project that I’ve been working on for awhile, the “360 Aerial Virtual Tour”. To say this type of photography is difficult is an understatement especially from a helicopter, what with the rotor blade’s in most shot’s and not being able to see above you and also what’s below.

Well, after a lot of trial and error, some clever thinking and a very steady helicopter I’ve managed to come up with the first (so I’m told) full 360 Aerial Virtual Tour of Perth from a helicopter. I ended up using 13 image’s out of a total of 99 that were taken for this virtual tour alone.

360 Aerial Panorama, Perth

Over the last year or so I’ve been working on stitching images from the air to create massive aerial panorama’s but there’s been quite a few issue’s with doing this. However, the problem’s have been solved and this is the first 360 aerial panorama of the new technique.

Taken from the helicopter, it’s an 11 image stitch taking in a full 360 degree view of Perth, Western Australia - at 1000ft. I do have to thank Paul (pilot), for keeping the helicopter steady – now it’s time to do more of these over other locations around Perth.

2009 Fremantle to Mandurah Poker Run

There’s a great event held off the coast of Perth each year called the Fremantle to Mandurah Poker Run, an event for power boats that start’s at Fremantle, heads out to Garden Island, back to Henderson, down to Rockingham, under the Garden Island causeway bridge and then onto Mandurah. Each year we provide the image capture (stills & video) which this year took almost 3 hours.

Osborne Park Fire

While on the way to a site today we noticed all the black smoke coming from a factory in Osborne Park so took a few photos on the way past. Found out later it was a plastics factory spilling out heaps of toxic smoke. Even managed to get the ch. 7 heli in a few images - taken with the 70-200 – 2.8IS.

One of the question’s we get asked a lot is “What is it like to take photo’s from a helicopter?” Well, here’s a photo from a recent boat photoshoot off Perth that give’s you a good idea of the perspective from the cabin. This was a sharp left turn to try and catch up to a boat at the back of the pack – taken with the Canon 15mm fisheye lens.

Jurien Bay Island’s photo

This is a shot from back in January when Paul and I decided to go and take some photos of the Pinnacles and Jurien Bay area after we had finished up with the Lancelin windsurfing race. I went to primary school at Jurien for a few year’s so it was good to finally explore the island’s and the area around North Head – the island’s are definitely a hidden gem.
