Kalamunda High School had it’s 50th birthday yesterday so we invited along to take some photos of the students spelling out “Kalamunda 50″ on the oval, here’s 3 images from the big day.

Junkyards

There’s really not anything of great interest to see when flying around the suburban area’s of Perth but in certain place’s are these great old junkyards. I’ve started taking more and more photo’s of these place’s as you can stare at them for age’s and still find something new in each shot. There’s also some semi-rural block’s that have classic old rusting car’s everywhere which I’ll post at a later date.

This shot, taken last week is a junkyard in Malaga which was next door to a site we were photographing for a client. Taken with the 70-200 IS 2.8

360 Aerial Panorama, Perth

Over the last year or so I’ve been working on stitching images from the air to create massive aerial panorama’s but there’s been quite a few issue’s with doing this. However, the problem’s have been solved and this is the first 360 aerial panorama of the new technique.

Taken from the helicopter, it’s an 11 image stitch taking in a full 360 degree view of Perth, Western Australia - at 1000ft. I do have to thank Paul (pilot), for keeping the helicopter steady – now it’s time to do more of these over other locations around Perth.

One of the question’s we get asked a lot is “What is it like to take photo’s from a helicopter?” Well, here’s a photo from a recent boat photoshoot off Perth that give’s you a good idea of the perspective from the cabin. This was a sharp left turn to try and catch up to a boat at the back of the pack – taken with the Canon 15mm fisheye lens.

Floating Dock

Back in December we were asked to capture (film/images) the arrival and unloading of this massive floating dock off Garden Island for http://www.strategicmarine.com/ . The weather wasn’t the best with patchy rain, overcast skies and at 7am it was a little bit cold as well. This floating dock will be based at the Marine complex in Henderson where it can be filled with water, lowered below the water level so ships/submarines can just drive onto it and then it will be raised leaving them high and dry so maintenance can carried out on them.

All up it took about an hour where we managed to take about 700 images.

EDIT; Well, they’ve put it in the July issue which is on the shelve’s now, even in Australia.

We were contacted by Popular Science magazine (U.S. Version) several weeks ago about using the following image for a centre spread in the June issue so it was uploaded the next day and is now out. Haven’t been able to track down one in Aus. yet but have heard it’s around. It’s a photo of the http://www.greenbird.co.uk/ taken at Lake Lefroy near Kalgoorlie in August last year during the land speed record attempt which after the lake was flooded was moved to Nevada.

This is a 1 min. exposure with a handheld flash being fired once in 3 different locations around the Greenbird. Taken at about 5am and it was freezing -1 I think. There’s more images on my website in the helifotos gallery.

The Havila Harmony

We were asked recently to photograph the Havship, mining, exploration,ila Harmony for www.tsmarine.net as it was leaving Fremantle heading north but as is common with this business the departure date kept on being put back. After a week or so we found out the departure had changed and was now going to be at night so it was decided to quickly head down to Fremantle and get some image’s before sunset. In the end we ended up with about 250 image’s at various height’s and angle’s.

This image has been sitting around on my computer for age’s but I just wasn’t happy with it in colour so converted it to B&W - then I spent several month’s looking at it again and still weren’t happy. Anyway, made a few minor adjustment’s and now feel I’ve done as much as I can with it so this is the final edition.

It was taken back in February last year when we were heading to Augusta. On the way past Busselton the Geographe Bay Race Week was on so there were quite a few yacht’s around and on the horizon there was this large heat trough approaching from Cape Naturaliste which give’s this image the storm look. A heat trough isn’t a storm but the 40 degree temp. produce’s a low level fog type cloud that slowly move’s in and cover’s the coast for about a day giving the impression of a storm.

City Beach Sunset.

Was another great sunset in Perth last night so headed down to City Beach for the first time. I’m not a big fan of these groyne’s that are around Perth so have alway’s avoided them. However somebody asked me for a photo of City Beach last week so thought I’d add one to the portfolio. I have one more from last night that was taken when the sun was still on the horizon, but it’s not enjoying being stitched so will put it up later this week.
